International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated every year on March 8th with thousands of events held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements. IWD events range from women’s craft markets, fashion shows and networking lunches, through to political rallies and large scale corporate sponsored events.
Originally started as a socialist political event in America and Europe in about 1908, IWD now spans the globe and is marked in some countries with an official holiday. Often IWD sees the tradition of men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc with flowers and small gifts. Often the day is celebrated by wearing purple ribbons.
